Descendants of Margaret Jacobs (nee Gammell)

Margaret Gammell  was born in about 1780/81 and was the fourth daughter of Lt Gen Andrew Gammell.  She was married on 28 September 1825 in St Pancras, London to Joseph Jacobs of Woodbridge.  They had three sons, Abraham Andrew Gammell Jacobs who was born in 1839, Albert Israel Gammell Jacobs who was born in 1840 and died in the same year, and Isaac Ernest Gammell Jacobs who was born sometime before 1847 and who died in childhood.  This is the story of Abraham Andrew Gammell Jacobs, the only one of her children to survive into adulthood and of his descendants.

4.1 Abraham Andrew Gammell Jacobs, who called himself Andrew, married Emma Bennett in St Paul's, Deptford on 22 April 1866.  He described himself as a Labourer.  They had four children:

4.1.3 Ernest Joseph Jacobs (1870–1959)
4.1.4 Julia Louise Jacobs (1873–1968)
By 1871, Andrew was a tobacconist living in Southwark. Emma died on 13 Dec 1897, and Andrew on 10 Sep 1903, leaving £210 to his son Andrew.

4.1.1 Andrew Gammell Jacobs was born on 24 February 1867 and was an accountant.  In 1891 he married Elizabeth Susan Field and they had two sons:
Frederick Andrew Gammell Jacobs (1892–1982)
Francis Ernest Gammell Jacobs (1904–1983)
Elizabeth died on 18 May 1917 and almost immediately, also in 1917, Andrew married Naomi Wood.  They had no children and Andrew died in Essex on 26 Jan 1954, Naomi on 12 Apr 1964, also in Essex.

4.1.1.1 Frederick Andrew Gammell Jacobs was born on 23 March 1892 in Wandsworth. In 1917 he married Maud Emily Causton.  They had two children:

4.1.1.1.2 Geoffrey F Jacobs (1925-2015)
Maud died in 1969 in Worthing, Sussex and Frederick in 1982 in Eastbourne.

4.1.1.1.1 Edna M Jacobs was born in 1921.  In 1942, she married William J Mundy and they had three sons:

4.1.1.1.1.2 Robert P Mundy (1950)
4.1.1.1.1.3 Andrew S Mundy (1955)

4.1.1.1.2 Geoffrey F Jacobs was born in mid 1925.  He married Joyce Warrington and was a bank manager.  Together they had five children:

4.1.1.1.2.3 Verity C F Jacobs (1963)

Geoffrey died in 2015.

​Valerie had a son, Joseph Frazer Jacobs in 1994, Verity had a daughter Grace Elizabeth Cecilia Jacobs in 1996, and Iain had a daughter Cerys Megan Jacobs in 2006.

4.1.1.2 Francis Ernest Gammell Jacobs was born early in 1904 at Thornton Heath in Surrey. At the time of his marriage to Nora Dainty on 5 September 1927, he described himself as a confectioner.  They emigrated to New Zealand, where Francis died in 1983 and Nora in 1994. They had no children.

4.1.2 Margaret Grace Jacobs was born on 27 May 1868 in Deptford, Kent. On 26 Apr 1900, she married Norman Gerrard Hill, a hemp and jute broker living in Sidcup, Kent. Norman died in 1926 and Margaret on 22 March 1927, both in Kensington. Probate was granted to Ernest Joseph Jacobs stonemason (her brother) and Julia Louise Donovan widow (her sister). Home address 24 Redcliffe Square, Earls Court.

4.1.3 Ernest Joseph Jacobs was born on 21 April 1870 in Southwark. On 20 February 1898 he married Emma Savill and on the certificate described himself as a warehouse man.  In 1901 they had a son, Ernest Gerard Gammell Jacobs.  By 1911 the family was living in Camberwell and Ernest was a builder's labourer.  More curiously he had begun to use the surname Cooper, although he didn't officially change his name until 1932.  On Christmas day 1925, Emma died at Charing Cross Hospital.  In the spring of 1931 he married Hilda Florence Dye and on 10 May 1932 he changed his name by deed poll to Ernest Joseph Cooper. His occupation at the time was shown as stone mason (London Gazette 13 May 1942).  Ernest died on 3 October 1959 at St James Hospital, Balham.  Probate was granted to his son Ernest Gerard Gammell Jacobs. Hilda died on 31 May 1961.

4.1.3.1 Ernest Gerard Gammell Jacobs was born in London on 25 Nov 1901.  He lived his life in south London and does not appear to have married.  He died on 15 March 1962.

4.1.4 Julia Louise Jacobs was born on 3 May 1873 in Southwark.  Sometime around the turn of the century, she married Henry John Donovan who worked in the printing industry as a stereotyper.  In 1901 they had a daughter, Grace Louise Donovan, who died in 1902. In 1903, they had a son, Henry Francis Donovan, in 1907, another son Gerard Donovan, and in 1910 a daughter Grace Margaret Donovan. Henry died on 20 December 1917, but Julia lived on until 28 January 1968, when she died in Camden.

4.1.4.1 Grace Louise Donovan (1901-1902) was born in Holborn in 1901 and died in 1902.

4.1.4.2 Henry Francis Donovan was born on 3 July 1903 in Holborn, London.  We know nothing more about him, but that he died in 1984 in Eastbourne.

4.1.4.3 Gerard Donovan was born on 20 June 1907 in Holborn, London. Again we know nothing about his life other than he died in 1975 in Southwark.

4.1.4.4 Grace Margaret Donovan was born on 13 April 1910 in Holborn, London. We know nothing of her life other than that she died in 1990 in the City of London.
